Somatic therapy for anxiety
Anxiety often lives in the body as much as the mind. Somatic therapy helps calm your nervous system and release the physical patterns that keep anxiety cycling.
Anxiety isn't just a mental experience. It's a whole-body one. The racing heart, tight chest, shallow breathing, clenched jaw, and churning stomach are all signs that your nervous system is stuck in a state of high alert. While talking therapies can help you understand your anxiety, somatic therapy works directly with the body to release the physical patterns that keep it cycling.
How anxiety lives in the body
When you experience stress or threat, your autonomic nervous system activates a fight-or-flight response. This is a normal, protective mechanism. But when stress is chronic or overwhelming, the nervous system can become dysregulated, stuck in a heightened state even when there's no immediate danger.
Over time, this creates physical patterns: habitually tense muscles, restricted breathing, a body that's always bracing for the next threat. These patterns feed back into your experience of anxiety, creating a self-reinforcing loop between body and mind.
How somatic therapy helps
Somatic practices work directly with your nervous system to interrupt this cycle. Rather than trying to think your way out of anxiety, you learn to regulate from the body up:
Releasing muscular tension. TRE™ (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) activates the body's natural tremor mechanism to discharge stored tension from deep in the core, particularly the psoas muscles, which are closely linked to the stress response.
Restoring breathing patterns. Conscious Connected Breathwork helps you access and release held emotions while retraining the body's relationship with breath, one of the most direct pathways to nervous system regulation.
Building capacity for calm. With regular practice, your nervous system develops greater resilience. You build a wider "window of tolerance," meaning everyday stressors are less likely to tip you into anxiety.
What the research shows
Studies on both TRE™ and breathwork have shown promising results for anxiety reduction. Neurogenic tremoring has been found to decrease cortisol levels and reduce symptoms of anxiety, while controlled breathing practices activate the parasympathetic nervous system, the body's built-in calming mechanism.
What to expect
In our workshops, you'll be guided through both practices in a safe, supportive environment. Many people report feeling a noticeable shift after their very first session: a sense of spaciousness, calm, or simply being more present in their body.
You don't need any prior experience, and no special fitness level is required. Our experienced facilitators create a trauma-informed space where you can explore at your own pace.
